Prisons
Location of Prison and Places of Detention
The Inspector of Prisons carries out inspections of the 14 institutions in the Irish Prison System. 11 of these institutions are traditional "closed" institutions. There are 2 open centres, which operate with minimal internal and perimeter security (Loughan House and Shelton Abbey) and one "semi-open" facility with traditional perimeter security but minimal internal security (the Training Unit). The majority of female prisoners are accommodated in the purpose built "Dóchas Centre" and the remainder are located in a separate wing of Limerick Prison.
